After more than two decades of rocking out, Deftones are showing no signs of decline. Their latest album, private music, marks 30 years since the release of their 1995 debut album Adrenaline. What Genre is Deftones?
Questions regarding the exact genre Deftones fall under have followed the band for its entire existence. Many fans believe they fall into the category of nu or alternative metal. But in an interview with Revolver mag, Deftones lead singer Chino Moreno claimed that the band “never fit into the metal world” even though they could play shows with metal bands.
During that same interview, he also mentioned how cool it is to be able to “dip and go into anything and make it work.” Ultimately, although it seems like they’d prefer not to be boxed into any one genre, their contributions to nu and alternative metal are impossible to ignore.

Adrenaline (1995)
Deftones’ major-labor debut, Adrenaline, flew under the radar initially. But standout tracks like “Bored” and “7 Words” provided a much-needed alternative for hard rock and metal fans who were burnt out on the grunge and post-grunge sound.
Around the Fur (1997)
After an impressive (albeit overlooked) debut album, Deftones returned in ‘97 with the release of Around the Fur. With songs like “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away),” “My Own Summer (Shove It),” and “Headup,” this album cemented the band as a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.

White Pony (2000)
By the year 2000, the hierarchy of the metal world was completely different from 10 or even 5 years before, and Deftones were among the leaders of the new school. This was evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive reception of White Pony, which includes the hit singles “Change (In the House of Flies),” “Back to School (Mini Maggit),” “Passenger,” and “Knife Prty.” The 20th anniversary edition released in December 2020 contains remixes to many of the songs featured on the original.
Deftones (2003)
Showing no signs of slowing down, their self-titled release Deftones picked up right where White Pony left off. Songs like “Hexagram,” “Minerva,” and “Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event” showcase the band’s dedication to their signature sound.

B-Sides & Rarities (2005)
B-Sides & Rarities introduces listeners to tracks that were previously unheard, along with covers of popular songs, like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and Sade’s “No Ordinary Love.” This album also contains previously unreleased tracks from throughout the band’s career.
Saturday Night Wrist (2006)
A decade of recording and performing together takes its toll on every band, and Deftones are no exception. Along with tension among bandmates, lead singer Chino Moreno recorded Saturday Night Wrist in the midst of battling drug addiction and a marriage on the rocks. Still, the band delivered quality tracks like “Hole in the Earth,” “Cherry Waves,” and “Mein.”

Diamond Eyes (2010)
Diamond Eyes saw a change at bassist, from Chi Cheng to Sergio Vega, as Cheng suffered a coma resulting from a bad car accident. Vega was able to seamlessly fill the void left by the longtime bassist as the album marked the band’s highest-charting release since their 2003 self-titled project. Singles like “You’ve Seen the Butcher,” “Sextape,” and “Diamond Eyes” helped catapult the album into the top 10 of the US Billboard 200.
Covers (2011)
Deftones’ 2011 Record Store Day release of Covers contains a mix of previously released tracks. Throughout their career, the band has a tradition of recording cover songs after the completion of album recording sessions, and this spans the length of their career up to this point.

Koi No Yokan (2012)
Since Koi No Yokan combines elements of Saturday Night Wrist with Diamond Eyes, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it landed the band back on the Billboard 200, this time slotting in at 11. Some of the tracks helping the album garner critical reception include “Swerve City,” “Leathers,” “Goon Squad,” and “Tempest.”
Gore (2016)
Gore served as the band’s highest-charting album since their self-titled release over a decade before, even in the face of turmoil between Moreno and the band’s lead guitarist, Stephen Carpenter. Singles from the album include “Prayers/Triangles” and “Phantom Bride.”

Ohms (2020)
Grammy-nominated Ohms served as the final Deftones album featuring bassist Sergio Vega. Supported by the singles “Ohms” and “Genesis,” it peaked at #1 on the US Top Hard Rock albums and #5 on the Billboard 200 charts.
