Hoopla’s Movie Club for May

This month’s Movie Club on Hoopla is leaning into campy, dark comedy fun, just in time for spring. Our May Movie Club pick is the iconic Little Shop of Horrors (1986), celebrating its 40th anniversary. It’s a completely enjoyable mix of humor, horror, and unforgettable music.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) works at a struggling flower shop and secretly grows a strange plant he names Audrey II (the voice of Levi Stubbs) after his crush (Ellen Greene). The plant starts talking (surprise!) and craves human blood (double surprise!), pushing Seymour into dark choices. As things spiral, his guilt builds until he’s forced into a final, intense confrontation.

The 1986 classic is based on a black-and-white B-movie from 1960. This version, The Little Shop of Horrors, is not a musical. Rather, it’s a dark science fiction flick. Watch for Jack Nicholson (in only his third film role) as Wilbur Force, a dental patient who enjoys pain.

The family hires a nanny, Debbie (Joan Cusack), who’s secretly a serial killer after Uncle Fester’s money. Meanwhile, the kids get sent to a bright, overly cheerful summer camp, where their dark style clashes with everyone else.
