Every November 23, fans around the world celebrate the anniversary of Doctor Who, the longest-running science fiction series in history. Doctor Who premiered on November 23, 1963, making the timeless show 62 this year! (If you’re a Whovian, you could go down a rabbit hole about our use of the word “timeless.” You’re welcome.)

What Is Doctor Who About? Or, Who Is Doctor Who?

Who Is Doctor Who? Find out on Hoopla

Doctor Who follows the enigmatic Time Lord known as the Doctor (never Dr.), who travels through time and space in the TARDIS—a blue police box that’s much, much bigger on the inside. Able to regenerate into new forms, the Doctor has lived many lives, faced cosmic dangers, met numerous companions, and helped those in need across the universe. (A sad note—Pauline Collins, who appeared in Doctor Who as Samantha Briggs, the original companion, and later as Queen Victoria, passed away on November 5 at age 85.) In adventure after adventure, the Doctor offers humor, chilling moments (we still see Weeping Angels in our nightmares), and intriguing plots that make us reevaluate our place in the universe.
